Pumpkin Heads

Pumpkin heads are druidic constructs, typically made in autumn when the raw materials for creating them are in abundance. A pumpkin head starts life (so to speak) as a simple scarecrow and a handful of pumpkin seeds. Through casting certain spells and applying some rare herbs, the scarecrow is given the ability to move, and its head is replaced with a leering carved pumpkin containing a magically-maintained flame.

Due to their ability to remove their heads, kick them at intruders, and regrow them instantly, they are frequently used as guardians. However, they have the disadvantage of being rather temporary constructs. When winter comes around, they become rather useless, pumpkin heads rotting and components freezing, and they soon fall apart, leaving pumpkin seeds behind which can grow into new pumpkin patches. So, if you encounter a pumpkin patch growing in the middle of the woods somewhere, beware… You may have happened upon a druidic sanctuary.

Stories tell of pumpkin heads that ride on horseback, but so far, no one has seen one…

Encounters

  • Pumpkin heads were first encountered in the Redmaw Hideout, mere hours after it had been cleared out of goblins. The pumpkin heads were numerous throughout the hideout, and nearly brought down several characters, but were all successfully destroyed.

Trivia

  • Pumpkin heads were originally created to act as seasonal enemies during Halloween campaigns. In MapTool, they may be represented using images of Pumpkinheads from the Ogre Battle series of video games.
